未来某夏天的7月2日，地球上 suddenley discover a massive spacecraft closing in on Earth. Its strange radio signals scramble global communication satellites and unleash a fleet of sub-spacecraft over major cities worldwide. The origin of the alien spacecraft remains unknown, plunging mankind into chaos and confusion. Computer genius David (portrayed by Jeff Goldblum) cracks the code of the alien's radio signals, revealing they are countdowns to an attack. However, it's too late; on July 3rd, the alien mothership begins its assault on Earth, leaving civilization vulnerable to catastrophic destruction. The President (portrayed by Bill Pullman) and his team evacuate to a military base, attempting to counterattack, but to no avail. Military bases are quickly destroyed, leaving only one pilot, Steven (played by Will Smith), to lure an alien fighter jet to its doom. Survivors flee to a secret military facility, where scientists have been studying a crashed alien spaceship for decades, determined to find a way to defend humanity.
