在30年代初，日本帝国侵占了我国东北三省。在一个寒冷的冬日，日本 militarists, led by the treacherous landlord High Lord Gao, slaughtered the garrison of Yellow Flag. A hunter named Guan Yun-tian vowed to avenge his country and his family's honor, forming a guerrilla group called the Crossbow Troop.
Gao's son, Gao Yu-chen, had long coveted Guan Yun-tian's fiancee, Er Lan-zi. Seizing the opportunity when Guan Yun-tian went into hiding, Gao Yu-chen manipulated Er Lan-zi in various ways. One day, Er Lan-zi lured Gao Yu-chen deep into the mountains, only to be captured by Guan Yun-tian's ambush and held as a hostage, demanding food, horses, and weapons from the Gao family in exchange for his release.
The Gao family, desperate to save their son, agreed to the terms. As a result, Guan Yun-tian was hailed as "the Eastern Hero" by the people, striking fear into the hearts of his enemies. One night, Guan Yun-tian sneaked into the Gao household to console Er Lan-zi over her father's death. Unfortunately, he was captured by Gao Yu-chen and brutally tortured by Japanese forces. With his life hanging in the balance, Guan Yun-tian fought for his life, managing to escape with Er Lan-zi.
Guan Yun-tian was pursued by enemy soldiers, but his horse and servant managed to get him deep into the mountains. Er Lan-zi stumbled back home, only to be confronted again by Gao Yu-chen. When she saw Guan Yun-tian's bloodied jacket with bullet holes, Er Lan-zi lost all hope. To save her family, she reluctantly married Gao Yu-chen.
However, it turned out that Guan Yun-tian was not dead. He had been saved by a group of good men from the Green Forest, led by a man named Xiang Ji-long. After recovering, Guan Yun-tian returned to his guerrilla troop and brought them to the safety of the Green Forest. On the eve of the Lantern Festival, the Japanese surrounded the Green Forest.
