清光绪年代，山河颠沛，国家处于生死存亡的崩坏边缘。 Emperor Guangxu, played by Su Dafu, found himself as a puppet, controlled by the domineering Empress Dowager Cixi, portrayed by Tang Ruping. With the help of Grand Secretary Li Hongzhang and others, the emperor begins to question his rule, while his consort, Consort Wenxiu, played by Zhou Xun, secretly amasses wealth for military purposes. The humiliating defeat in the Battle of Lugou Bridge leads Li Hongzhang to return home, but not before recommending Kang Youwei to Guangxu. In 1898, under the reign of the Hundred Days' Reform and facing resistance from the conservative forces led by Empress Dowager Cixi, the emperor attempts to modernize China. However, their ideological differences escalate, causing a power struggle that threatens to tear apart the empire. Empress Dowager Cixi devises a plan to use the Imperial Review of Troops in Tianjin as an opportunity to overthrow Guangxu, while the Hundred Days' Reform Party takes action by sending Yuan Shikai to assassinate Regent Prince Gong and surround the Empress Dowager. The tension between these factions reaches its climax, ultimately leading to a nation on the brink of collapse.
