The imminent collective eruption of the volcanic chain constantly threatened the whales at the verge of being swept ashore by tsunami, the creatures living on the islands in the vicinity, the equipment at the repair station of the small squad, the crops and livestock on the underwater farm... Not to mention the countless species who dwelled within the active volcanoes!
