19世纪50年代，朝鲜沦陷于内乱和外部威胁之下，民众生活窘迫。被打倒的乞丐少年张承业幸运地遇到书生金柄文（interpreted as the mentor who saves him from misery），两人在后来成为不可分解的伙伴。通过李凝轩（interpreted as a friend of goldsmith）的帮助，张承业正式进入大画院学习绘画。五年过去， thanks to his exceptional talent, Johnson started to make a name for himself and ventured out into the world on his own.
One chance encounter led him to meet courtesan Mei Xiang, whom he painted a beautiful picture of plum blossoms with the inscription "Plum Blossoms: A Lifetime Unsold". Soon after, he found himself at the home of his former crush Li Yunxuan (interpreted as the sister of his first love), where he created a masterpiece entitled "Phoenix Picture" for a friend in need. Bidding farewell to Li Yunxuan, Johnson continued his aimless wandering, eventually becoming known for his pottery-like artwork.
Unfortunately, during that time, society looked down upon artists, especially intellectual ones like Johnson. Feeling disheartened, he had no choice but to continue drifting from place to place, channeling his passion into his art.
