in the heartland of Pearl River Delta, Pocket Street, also known as Back Alley, lies 45 kilometers away from Guangzhou and 80 kilometers from Hong Kong. Transformed from a rural village into an industrial township in the span of just a few decades, it's a testament to the influx of capital from Taiwan and Hong Kong, as well as the massive labor force from China's underdeveloped regions. The factory workers, former peasants, journeyed across great distances to seek their fortunes in this bustling urban hub.
The dilapidated tenements surrounding the factories served as the first refuge for these migrant workers, a temporary sanctuary amidst the alien cityscape. Here, they started anew, constructing their own homes far from their ancestral lands. This film offers a glimpse into the lives of these unheralded toiling farmers, their struggles and triumphs serving as a vital cornerstone in China's urbanization process.
