19世纪中叶，古老中华大地在清朝统治之下。为了Counteract the incursion of Russia, the empire repealed a centuries-old seclusion policy enforced in the northeast, encouraging farmers from within the Great Wall to cultivate barren lands in the east. Among these pioneers was the intrepid Zhu Kaishan (portrayed by Li Yifeng), who embarked on this journey of discovery. Yet, by the time he set foot outside the wall, the Qing Dynasty had fallen, and this audacious young man, who once joined the Boxer Rebellion, found himself lost in a world beyond his understanding. Meanwhile, his wife (portrayed by Sara Dawn Pena), hearing news of her husband's whereabouts, bravely embarked on a journey to find him, leading their children through perilous landscapes and tumultuous times. This era was marked by warfare among world powers, internal strife, natural disasters, and human calamities that left countless Chinese people displaced and struggling for survival.
