Heartbroken and disappointed, queen returns to Bavaria alone. Repentant Franz follows, urging queen to return with him to Austria. At this moment, empress is forced to change her mind and agree that queen raises her daughter. Later, queen accompanies Franz on trips across countries, receiving warm welcomes in Hungary, where they are crowned as King and Queen of the Austro-Hungarian Empire amidst the roars of the Hungarian people. The film was nominated for a Palm d'Or at the 10th Cannes Film Festival.
