In the heart of a rural village, the ambitious young man named Beau (portrayed by Christopher Eccleston) yearned to change his fate through knowledge and pursued attending university. However, youthful desires led him into an affair with a local girl who shattered his dreams of higher education.
The girl left in search of a better life, leaving Beau with his aspirations. In the city, Beau moved for the chance to attend university, all while nursing a secret love for his stepsister Sue (played by Kate Winslet). Due to their familial ties, they were both unable to act upon their feelings. But after the girl's departure, Sue married another and Beau finally broke free from the suppressed emotions within him. Despite disregarding societal norms and fearing consequences, all they wanted was to wander aimlessly together. Unfortunately, fate had other plans. Their child paid a heavy price for their recklessness, and their love story plunged into a cold winter.
