在日本经济发展的迅速冲击下,茨城县鹿岛 village 一直保持宁静,但巨大的工业涌入, Agricultural areas were quickly transformed into industrial coastlines. The resourceful brain of Hiroshi Sugawara (played by Rentarō Mikuni), a farmer in the Sugawara family, saw an opportunity and sold their land for profit, using it to buy an automatic tipper truck. He made a fortune transporting sand and stones to construction sites. However, his newfound wealth led him into a dangerous addiction to drugs, culminating in the drowning deaths of his two sons. Shocked out of his stupor, Hiroshi vowed to make amends, commissioning a statue of Kannon (the Buddhist deity of mercy) and his sons' memorial stone. However, his relationship with his wife, Fumiko (played by Kyōko Kagawa), only grew more strained.
Just as the family's turmoil seemed unbearable, Hiroshi's younger brother Ryota's girlfriend, Yoshie, arrives on the island. She soon becomes entangled in Hiroshi's tragic past, offering a glimmer of hope and redemption in this poignant drama. This film was honored as one of the ten best films of 1982 by Kinema Junpo, received the Best Actor award at the 37th Annual Mainichi Film Awards, and was ranked as the second-best Japanese film of the 1980s by critics.
